Microsoft has an unsupported virtual CD-ROM program. Why buy alcohol or Daemon Tools?

Alcohol and Daemon Tools are excellent software packages that allow users to mount ISO files as virtual CD-ROMs. Yes, there is a way to use that ISO without burning it to a disk.
Although I love these tools, Microsoft has a free, 60kb program that does the same thing! Of course, it is not supported… and it’s not as friendly as the software listed above; however, it works and it’s free.
Here’s the download link:

Here’s the readme:

    1. Copy VCdRom.sys to your %systemroot%\system32\drivers folder.
    2. Execute VCdControlTool.exe
    3. Click “Driver control”
    4. If the “Install Driver” button is available, click it. Navigate to the %systemroot%\system32\drivers folder, select VCdRom.sys, and click Open.
    5. Click “Start”
    6. Click OK
    7. Click “Add Drive” to add a drive to the drive list. Ensure that the drive added is not a local drive. If it is, continue to click “Add Drive” until an unused drive letter is available.
    8. Select an unused drive letter from the drive list and click “Mount”.
    9. Navigate to the image file, select it, and click “OK”. UNC naming conventions should not be used, however mapped network drives should be OK.
You may now use the drive letter as if it were a local CD-ROM device. When you are finished you may unmount, stop, and remove the driver from memory using the driver control.

How To Get Back Our Lost Handphone

How I Got My Lost iPhone Back From a Good Samaritan

OK – Yes. I know MobileMe offers a “Find My Phone” – But I did not have that. (Now I do.) But that means that you have to find the “location” and go knocking on doors and all that chasing stuff. Still better than never getting it back.
And yes, I know I have a $500 reward. But heck, a new iphone is $699.00 when you are not starting a plan. So that is CHEAPER for me. And for the finder, he can take my reward money and buy a new one for $299 and profit $200. So it is better for him to return it than keep it.
And yes, I know there are “apps” that do I what I am about to show you. But they suck and this is EASIER and it looks better and it is FREE.
So here is what I did to get my phone back.
Step #1 – I open the “Notes” app that comes with every iPhone.
Step #2 – I went down 3 lines before typing (This makes sure the text is not hidden by some of the iphone messages that are on when you turn on the phone.)
Step #3 – I typed THIS MESSAGE below.
Lost iPhone Message
Lost iPhone Message
Step #5 – I took a screen shot of the note by hitting the POWER BUTTON on the top of my iPhone and the HOME button on the front of the iPhone at the SAME TIME. (It then saves the PIC to your “Camera Roll”
Step #6 – I then went to “Settings” >> “Wallpaper” >> and chose the photo from my Camera Roll.
I hit save and I was DONE!
So now, even with the phone lock feature, this is the first thing that shows when my phone is turned on. So I do not have to worry about someone trying to figure out my password. (That wipes your phone out 100% after several wrong attempts.)
So a person will find your phone… see that message… and will realize it is their lucky day and call you. It is your lucky day too. Ask anyone that ever lost a phone.
Even if the power goes dead. Anyone that finds an iPhone charge it, with the help of a friend if needed, and see the message on Power-up.
So, I was in a cab on Firday at StomperNetLive8 In Atlanta. I left my phone in the back of a cab.
I came home on Tuesday and found a phone sent FED-X and a note saying the money was not needed but he gave the address anyways if I felt I still wanted to send it.
I called him (number was in note) to thank him and I sent him the $500 reward.
I am a happy boy!
Thanks,
Mike Filsaime

Top 10 tips to keep that new computer spyware-free

Got a new computer for Christmas? Are you worried about all the spyware horror stories you’ve read? You should be. I’ve heard varying numbers, but it’s said that putting an unprotected computer on a high-speed connection results in getting infected within a few minutes. I just read that the time is getting longer, but that’s not much comfort. By all means you should have a router if you’re on a high speed connection. A router provides some protection, but is only the beginning. Ok, now the new machine is booted up the first time and ready to go. It’s on the net. In this order, here’s what to do.
1. Update Windows immediately. In the Windows Security Center in the Control Panel turn on automatic download and installation for updates. Unless the computer came with a third party security suite or firewall, turn on the Windows XP firewall.
2. Update the pre-installed antivirus definitions and other security apps. Set them to auto update.
3. Download and install an alternative browser like Firefox or Opera.
4. Lockdown Internet Explorer. Yes, do it even if you use a different browser.
5. Install at least two anti-spyware apps. My top two recommended free apps are Ad-Aware and Microsoft AntiSpyware. Update definitions for both and turn on active protection in Microsoft AntiSpyware.
6. Install some free protective programs like SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard from Javacool Software.
7. Install IE-SPYAD, which puts nearly 20,000 known dangerous domains in IE’s restricted site zone.
8. Install a HOSTS file from here or here.
9. Educate yourself on how to not become infected in the first place.
10. Surf safe and practice safe hex.
